Daily Japanese Expression: 「開ける(Akeru)」vs「開く(Hiraku)」

We pic up and share some useful Japanese (Nihongo) phrases which you can use in your daily life in Japan.

For this week, we would like to explain Japanese words which is  hard to distinguish.

In Japanese, there are 2 types of words which can be translated “open”. “開ける(Akeru)” and “開く(Hiraku)”. Those words are difficult to understand differences.

“開ける(Akeru)” means make a space or make its contents reveal by taking off partitions or barriers.

For example, when you say  “Mado wo akeru. (Open a window)”, it shows that you take off a partition (window) between inside and outside to make a space. When you say “Hako wo akeru” (Open a box)”,it shows that you take off a partition (lid) between inside and outside and a space appears.

On the other hand, “開く(Hiraku)” can be used for something which has open/close movement like windows and doors. That’s why Hiraku focus on just the movement its plane part changes the angle. “Hon wo hiraku (Open a book)” also shows an action of change angles of book's two plane, pulling apart its over lapped two plane pivot on a side. “Kasa wo hiraku (Open an umbrella)” and  “Parashu-to wo hiraku (Open a parachute)” also shows a turning action with pivot point[s].

As we considered, “開ける(Akeru)” is focusing on the action to taking off a partition and the space. “開く(Hiraku)” is focusing on the turn action with a fulcrum. Due to the reason, when you say ‘Open the window’ in Japanese, you can use either  “Mado wo akeru” and “Mado wo hiraku” however, when you say “Open a book”, it will never make any space so that you cannot say “Hon wo akeru”.

Use the Japanese phrase and enjoy your daily life in Japan.

See you soon.
