Please imagine when you are asked something. What is your first phrase before answering?

You may say “well..” “let me see” or “let me think”.

Those phrases are used even when you are not conscious of it.

Even in Japanese language, you can find similar phrase.

『えっと...（etto..）』

えっと can be used while a second you are thinking. Just like ‘well…’ in English.

Following conversation is a sample with えっと…

A: 次の日曜日は何するの？ [Tsugino nichiyobi wa naniwo suruno?]

(What will you do on coming Sunday?)

B: えっと… ショッピングかな。[Etto… shopping kana]

(Well… I think shopping)
