When you ask someone to say again, how do you say? There are numbers of phrase for it.

’Would you say again?’ , ‘What did you say?’ or even just ‘What?’

Actually you would choose to use those phrases depends on situations and person you’d say to.

In Japanese, there are numbers of way for it and it is today’s topic.

#1：「なんと言いましたか？（Nanto iimashitaka?）」

‘なん（nan）’ means “what”.

‘言いました（iimashita）’ is a past form of ‘言います（iimasu）’ which means “say”.

‘か？（ka）’ can make sentence as an interrogate sentence.

Then, 「なんと言いましたか？（Nanto iimashitaka?）」means “What did you say?”

This phrase is natural and polite so you can use this on business scenes.

#2：「なんて言った？（Nanae itta?）」

This phrase also can be translated as “What did you say?” but has bit of differences.

‘言った（itta）’ is also a past form of ‘言います（iimasu）’ means “say” but this one is more casual. And this phrase do not has ‘か？（ka）’. When you do not put ‘か？（ka）’ for asking, the phrase becomes more casual.

#3：「なに？（Nani?）」

‘なに（nani）’ also means “what”.

This is really casual way.

#4：「え？（E?）」

This is also means “what?” and more casual than 「なに？（Nani?）」. You can use this with friends but not for business.
